The Voice of Kalamkari Border (Green / Lime / Leaf on Ivory)
I am a border, and I was born knowing it. Read me the way a tailor does, from the edge inward: a narrow band of palmettes at my top, a deep running band of flowers at my hem, and between them, the field where the garden lives.
The garden keeps its manners. Mughal cypress stems, a tree of life, every bloom in its place, drawn in four inks and no more: forest green for the outlines, sage for the leaves, lime for the open flowers, mustard for the small ones. The highlights are the ivory ground itself, left unprinted on purpose, the way a block print leaves its lights.
The birds did not get the memo. Between the cypresses, folk birds, outlined dark and dotted like old embroidery, each with a single daisy in its beak, facing left and right and straight at you.
My name comes from the Coromandel coast, where kalamkari was born with a pen in hand, block by block, in Machilipatnam and Srikalahasti. I was not printed there. I am handprinted in the USA, one color at a time, on a ground woven in Europe: 100% linen, 52 3/4 inches wide, a 39 3/4-inch repeat, lot J58007 B. Three continents, one cloth. The name travels farther than the hands, and the hands still show.
One hundred and twelve dollars, against a regular two sixty-four. The page states both numbers; I only repeat them. We send no cuttings. I cannot be sampled. I can only be lived with, edge first.
