Beige is sensible. Lavender is romantic. New Blue is coastal. And then there’s me — Inca Gold on Tint — the Cheetah who looked at the entire color wheel and chose the one that men crossed an ocean for. Not ochre, which is gold that gave up. Not brass, which is gold pretending to be hardware. Inca Gold. The gold with an empire’s name on it. The color that made whole expeditions set sail on a rumor.

I am, to be clear, still a cheetah print. I am still spots on Belgian linen, still allover, still 54 inches wide, still handprinted in the United States by someone whose hand I trust. But I am the sibling who showed up to the family portrait in something unexpected and looked better than everyone and did not apologize. Put me on a headboard — there’s a photograph right there that proves it works — and your bedroom becomes the room people describe to each other afterward. Not floral. Not botanical. Not “nature-inspired.” Just gold, in the way that treasure is gold when it has finally been found.

How many yards do we have? Because whoever finds me is going to want all of them.
